Your Mess Becomes Your Message

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

This is your life. And it's filled with bruises and bumps and mistakes and scars and embarrassments. So is mine.

Welcome to the club.

You belong here

“Don't give up. There will come a day when your mess will become your message. Your test will become your testimony. And your filth will become fertilizer for someone else's growth. -Tom Cottar”

This is why I love our Impactivist tribe. We all have scars. But your mess doesn't invalidate you. In fact, it can become your message. Don't believe me?

You should meet Monica, a dyslexic biology teacher who was told she'd never graduate high school. She ended up having a special needs child with an incredibly rare genetic disease. Know what she did? She graduated college. She started a nonprofit foundation for children with the same condition. She began lobbying for funding and research for children around the world. She went to law school, moved to Washington D.C., and built a network of parents and children who rely on their program to help their children, just like it helps her own child. Her mess became her message.

from a test to a testimony

You should meet Chrissy, a domestic abuse survivor who founded a shelter for other abused women.

You should meet Jessica, who lost her parents as a child, witnessed the devastating effects of drug abuse and became a narcotics officer (and later police chief!).

Then there's Rudy. The son of struggling Haitian immigrants who discovered Supreme Court Justice and civil rights activist Thurgood Marshall. He decided he could best serve his world by becoming a lawyer and advocate for families.

The list goes on. (We're sharing many of those on The Impactivist Show.).

Each of them has one thing in common: their mess became their message. Their struggles became their fuel. Their hardships became their fertilizer for their purpose.

Remember, your mess doesn't invalidate you. You're in the middle, not the end.
